From Full-Time Marketer to Freelance Consultant in Vancouver: My Journey

After working in marketing since 2018, most recently in-house for a small, family-owned business in Vancouver, I found myself at a crossroads. I realized I wanted to build my life differently — to create a career that gave me freedom, flexibility, and the ability to grow professionally while planning for my future.

My Turning Point

I saw many colleagues thrive in the structure of a traditional 9–5: predictable income, clear schedules, and defined growth paths. But for me, that structure felt confining. I couldn’t shake the feeling of being trapped — trapped in a ceiling for income potential, in a rigid schedule, and in the uncertainty of how to balance work and life goals, including starting a family.

At the same time, I grew up around entrepreneurship. Most of my family worked for themselves — running small businesses, consulting, or real estate — and I saw the independence and fulfillment that came with charting your own path. That seed inspired me to think differently about my career.

Finding My Niche in Vancouver

I started small, exploring how I could leverage my local network to help small business owners in Vancouver who needed marketing support but didn’t have the budget for a full-time hire or a large agency. I quickly identified a gap in the market: many small business owners were trying to run their own marketing, without the time or expertise to do it effectively.

This realization led me to carve out my niche: offering freelance marketing services in Vancouver that combine strategic thinking with hands-on execution — a flexible, affordable solution for local businesses. I could provide small business marketing help in Vancouver with the knowledge I gained managing a real marketing department, all while staying mindful of budgets and realities that local businesses face.
